Changing Seasons and Important Updates at Project R.E.S.T.
As the season turns to fall, Project R.E.S.T. is entering an intentional period of transition and growth. Following three years of dedicated and impactful service, President & CEO Krystal Watson, Esq., will step down effective September 4, 2026. Krystal has led with compassion, vision, and an unwavering commitment to survivors and the organization’s mission. Under her leadership, the organization navigated complex challenges, strengthened its foundation, and continued building a strong path forward. Krystal leaves Project R.E.S.T. in a resilient and well-positioned place, having thoughtfully strengthened executive and administrative operations to support the organization’s continued growth and lasting impact.
During her tenure, Krystal also advanced Project R.E.S.T.’s commitment to survivor-centered advocacy and expanded pathways to safety, stability, and justice. In 2024, she launched the organization’s Legal Advocacy Services Program at the Spartanburg County Courthouse, the first program of its kind in South Carolina, providing survivors with trauma-informed legal support, safety planning, and court representation. Her leadership has helped strengthen Project R.E.S.T.’s ability to serve survivors while elevating the importance of survivor safety and systemic change throughout the community. In recognition of her dedication to this work, Krystal was named the 2026 Champion of the Year by HER Champions. Most recently, in August 2026, Krystal was honored as a featured honoree in the Spartanburg County Foundation’s Celebrating Black Philanthropists exhibit during Black Philanthropy Month, celebrating her leadership, advocacy, service, and unwavering commitment to strengthening our community and creating meaningful change for survivors.
To maintain steady, strategic momentum, the Board of Directors have appointed Mary Dell Hayes as Interim President & CEO effective September 4. Mary brings extensive executive leadership experience, including her former role as Executive Director of Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands. She will guide the team through this transition while the Board conducts a comprehensive search for a permanent leader. As this new chapter unfolds, Project R.E.S.T. remains firmly positioned for continued success, grounded in an unwavering commitment to its mission, clients, and community.
