A Moment in Time…

By Janice Tuck, Shelter Operations Advocate at Project R.E.S.T.

Sometimes small things make all the difference. One afternoon I stood with a very grateful client at a gas station filling her car, which was packed with all her belongings and her children. They had been staying at our shelter, and we were working to assist them as she navigated their path forward.

We had learned that her abuser knew the shelter location – through no fault of hers or anyone else’s. It was just one of those things that happened. As soon as we discovered this, we connected with a sister organization and arranged a transfer.

The client was concerned her car might not have enough gas to get to the next destination. There are so many challenges in this work but that one was an easy fix. Thanks to Spartanburg Regional Foundation, we were able to fill her tank and supply her with gas cards to keep her rolling for a month or more.

She expressed her gratitude once more and leaned in and hugged me before getting back in the car and pulling away, driving herself and her children to safety. When escaping from an abusive situation, it can feel like there are many obstacles in the way of peace and security. The funds provided by Spartanburg Regional Foundation help to eliminate some of those obstacles and clear the way for clients to embark on their journey to restore, empower, support, and transform.
